About Me: pluginica( 4 ) About Me

Since its inception in 1972, Plug In has played a vital role in creating a living culture in Manitoba. Plug Ins' main gallery is a large, street-level space in the heart of the historic Exchange District in downtown Winnipeg. From its origins as one of Canadas' first artist-run centers, the gallery has instigated myriad activities and spin-off organizations, including Video Pool and Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art (MAWA). In 2001 Plug In Gallery renamed itself Plug In Institute for Contemporary Art, reflecting the organizations' involvement in all aspects of contemporary culture on the local, national and international stages.

With this new role, Plug In takes its place among the ICAs of the world, creating multiple access points to contemporary art in all its forms and media. As a place to encounter, experience and enjoy the arts of our time, Plug In
ICA exhibits distinctive and engaging works in visual art, architecture, film, installation art, music, performance, photography, sculpture and video. Plug In ICA intends to expand its role in the community to bring contemporary art to audiences and audiences to contemporary art through exhibitions, tours, publications, workshops, conferences, artists' talks and digital technology. Future plans include an expansion of the existing space to accommodate greater audiences, activities and artists working in new technologies.

This expanded designation, Plug In ICA, was announced in September, 2001 at a reception in Winnipeg, hosted by The Minister of Culture, Heritage and Tourism honouring the gallerys' success as Commissioning Institution for the Canadian Pavilion at the 2001 Venice Biennale. The audio-video installation The Paradise Institute by Janet Cardiff and Georges Bures Miller won both a Biennale Special Award and the coveted Benesse Award from Japan.
